Since the advent on Digital Media in cameras, downloading rushes has been another task added to the cameraman’s job sheet! Over the years I have developed a rather neat solution to make the ‘download’ as painless as possible, however this would still take some time to physically copy the footage, therefore this had to be planned around the shoot day. Now, thanks to the Portable SSD, this is a thing of the past!
Enter the Portable SSD Drive!
A client recently switched over their rushes drives to SanDisk Extreme Portable SSDs and I was just blown away! Compared to a high spec Lacie spinning disk USB 3/C drives, we reduced the time it took to download a 128GB XQD Card to three drives from 40 minutes to about 10 minutes!
These drives are a serous game changer for camera professionals dealing with their own downloads!
I remember switching to shooting UHD for a client 3-4 years ago and we went off for 4 days on the road shooting a corporate documentary. As it was just a small crew I was responsible for the ‘download’. This generally meant backing up rushes through my lunch break and back in the hotel room in an evening, just to ensure we had cards to shoot on and the material safely backed up!
After this experience I swiftly moved over to using Hedge backup software to make the job easier and quicker. It also offered piece of mind too with its copy verification checksum, you can read more about Hedge here.
However these SanDisk SSD Drives really bring downloading rushes to the next level! Making the process as painless, quick and straightforward as I have ever found it! Instead of spending a whole lunch break downloading I can usually work downloads around the shoot day. I can set up the MacBook Pro at appropriate times knowing that it won’t take very long, and given this, I can usually run on battery power too!
The Drives are USB-C and come with a short USB-C to C cable, for the ultimate speed, however they do also include a USB to USB-C adaptor too! Finally, the drives are super small (9.5x5cm) and portable and now one lives in my camera support bag as a backup drive for shoots!
